Firefighters and EMT/Paramedics are first responders who play a critical role in protecting lives and property during a wide range of emergencies. Their duties include responding to medical emergencies, traumatic incidents, conducting search and rescue operations, extricating victims from vehicles or hazardous environments, suppressing fires, and handling hazardous materials (HAZMAT) situations. In the course of their work, they may encounter Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals who have unique communication and accessibility needs. Understanding how to effectively engage with these individuals during high-stress situations is essential to providing equitable, life-saving care.

This training will cover:

  • Scenarios and case studies highlighting the needs of Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing citizens.

  • Understanding and applying Deaf Culture and accessible language needs to routine emergencies.

  • Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how it applies to Fire/EMS duties.
